Leadership & Motivation: How to inspire teams to perform

Using practical applications of traditional management theory, as well as recent developments in psychology (as agreed with client).
Leadership requires people to:
  1. Manage themselves

  2. Manage others

  3. Manage the business
This programme concentrates on points 1 and 2 and produces measurable improvements in performance.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is not just aimed at people managers, but also business leaders: people whose role relies on being able to influence people for whom they have no direct reporting authority.

In this course, you will develop the skills to understand how to motivate yourself, as well as the members of your teams and others you work with. You will develop flexibility in identifying the best way to motivate an individual or team in any given situation.

How Does It Work?

Management Theories (if requested by the client)
  • Maslow’s hierarchy of needs + Bateson / Dilts Neurological Levels

  • McGregor’s X and Y theory

  • Herzberg’s Motivator and Hygiene factor theory

  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicators (and comparison with Rodger Bailey’s Meta-Programmes)

  • Clare Graves’ Spiral Dynamics model of evolutionary levels

Psychology of Performance
  • Meta-Programmes: the types of motivational “software” that people run in their brains – our “motivation programmes”.

  • Beliefs and Values: identify why our beliefs and what’s important to us impacts the leadership style we respond to.

  • Outcomes: how moving someone from “tasks” through “goals” to “well-formed outcomes” can help them understand the longer-term consequences of a project and where their role fits. This leads to increased buy-in and motivation.

  • Comfort Zones: how fear of leaving a comfort zone can lead to lack of motivation. How to identify this and help a team or individual overcome their fears.

To enhance understanding, we would recommend a small amount of pre-course reading and an exercise in identifying the meta-programmes and comfort zones within delegates’ teams.

The Benefits

Develop flexibility in your behaviour through understanding how you motivate yourself and how you respond to different leadership styles.

You will start to decode how to lead and motivate others in the most appropriate way for them.

The course is highly practical, meaning you won’t just leave understanding the background theory, but will automatically be using your new skills in the work-place to make an immediate difference to your team’s performance.
